5 Things I Would Tell My 30-Year Old Self
Life is a beautiful, messy, and unpredictable journey. Here are a few lessons that I would tell my 30-year-old self.
Life is a beautiful, messy, and unpredictable journey. Here are a few lessons that I would tell my 30-year-old self:
1. Find Your Voice
Speaking up for yourself is not just important, it's empowering, especially when it is uncomfortable. When we use our voice, we not only teach people how to treat, respect, and love us, but we also assert our presence in the world. Early in life, I often suppressed my true thoughts and opinions to avoid conflict or please other people. But I've learned that finding and using your voice is crucial. It's about speaking up for your beliefs and not being afraid to express your true self. This empowerment is a gift you can give yourself.
I remember a time when I was working on a project at my old job. I had some ideas that could make a difference, but I kept quiet, thinking they might not be good enough. When someone else eventually suggested the same ideas, they were celebrated. That was my wake-up call. Don't wait for someone else to say what you're thinking. Your voice matters.
2. Self-Care Is Not Selfish
You have to put yourself first. You can't care for the people around you if you are not well. That means saying no when needed, not answering the phone, or taking the time to heal. Putting everyone else's needs before our own is easy in our busy lives. But self-care is not selfish; it's necessary. Time to nurture yourself replenishes your energy and helps you be the best version of yourself for those around you. When I started prioritizing self-care, I noticed a significant improvement in my overall well-being and my ability to handle stress.
I used to feel guilty about taking time for myself, especially as a young mom. But I realized that when I neglected my well-being, I couldn't show up fully for my family or work. Now, I prioritize self-care, whether it's a quiet morning coffee, a walk in the park, or a relaxing bath. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup.
3. Fear Is Inevitable
Fear is a constant companion on the road to growth. If everything is comfortable, it means you aren't growing. It is okay if you are trying and facing those fears. But do not fear stop or paralyze you. Feeling afraid when stepping into the unknown is natural, but don't let it paralyze you. Acknowledge your fear, but take the leap anyway. Each time you face your fears, you're not just conquering them but growing stronger and more resilient.
Starting my own business was one of the scariest decisions I've made. There were sleepless nights and countless what-ifs, but pushing through that fear has been incredibly rewarding. Every time you face your fears, you grow stronger and more resilient.
4. Trust Your Instinct
How often have you felt something or knew that something would happen before it did? Your intuition is a powerful guide. Trust it. Sometimes, your gut feeling knows more than your logical mind. When faced with decisions, listen to that inner voice.
I once was offered a job that seemed perfect on paper, but something felt wrong. I couldn't shake the uneasy feeling, so I declined the offer. I learned the company had gone through major layoffs a few months later. Trusting my instinct saved me from a potentially tricky situation.
5. Save Your Money
Financial stability is empowering. I can't stress enough how important it is to save your money. Start small if you have to, but make it a habit. Your future self will thank you. Whether a high-interest savings account or a 529 for your kids, you do it and make sure you have liquid cash for an emergency.
In my early thirties, I wasn't as disciplined with my finances as I should have been. It wasn't until I started budgeting and saving that I felt a sense of security and freedom. Whether it's for emergencies, opportunities, or retirement, having a financial cushion makes a difference.
Conclusion
These five lessons are things I wish to share with my younger self. Life is a continuous journey of learning and growth, and there is always time to start implementing these insights. If any of these points resonate with you, take them to heart and apply them to your own life.
Remember, you are stronger, wiser, and more capable than you realize. Trust the process and keep moving forward.
